Our Legacy, Our Land
After 1865, Owning land as a Black man in America was a symbol of freedom, economic independence, and a means to build generational wealth. When Fleming Ivanhoe Shelton purchased his first parcel of land in 1907 with his new bride, they did so with pride, dignity and their future generations in mind. From 1907 until now, that parcel of land has grown and nurtured a growing family and community. It grew as his family grew. It adapted as the community changed. Decades after their passing the farm that they poured their blood, sweat, and tears into is still a source of pride, freedom, and legacy.
After 1865, land ownership meant freedom. Today, it still does.
